Holt Literature and Language Arts
Core Literature –My Brother Sam is Dead, The Giver
AR book
Description: English is a first period split core. Students will investigate learning through the integrated theme of justice, equality, freedom and responsibility. In English we will read a variety of genres, from short stories, and non-fiction, to poetry and current events. Writing will span from narrative, argumentative, informative/explanatory, summary writing and a research report. Furthermore, students will improve in vocabulary, reading comprehension, and literary analysis. In addition, students are expected to read novels of choice at each his or her individual reading level with our Accelerated Reading Program.
Goals:
Prepare you for high school
Follow the Common Core Standards http://www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy/RL/8
Develop your critical thinking skills
Have fun along the way!
Requirements:
Come to class every day prepared. See supplies list
Be in your seat ready to learn and be engaged when the bell rings
Please sign up for remind. It is a free app for students and parents to receive reminders about important assignments, events, etc.
B.Y.O.D- Bring your own device See N.B.M.S Planner for guidelines.
Students and parents can make use of Remind.org this year to receive regular important reminders for academic success. Look for classcode attached to beginning of the year materials.
All students are expected to have or create a gmail account for academic use.
Homework: Typically assigned Mon-Thurs. and some Fridays. Most of the time the assignment is started in class and finished at home. More time will be spent on projects.
Grading policy
• Small assignments will have: check plus=Above expectations
• Check= Good 80% - full credit
• Check minus=Fair, or missing requirements. 70%
• Inc=sloppy, incomplete. 60% credit or redo for 70% with permission.
• Tests, quizzes, projects, etc are graded A-F, and will be assigned point values.
Class Participation Means: discussions, group work, oral presentations, debates, skits, and behavior.
Absent? YOU are responsible to make up missed assignments, tests, quizzes etc. due to illness. Check the assignment binder, and online, check in with a class buddy, and then schedule a time with me. You are responsible to make up tests, and or quizzes within one week upon your return.

- Late work will not be accepted on daily assignments. Exception: a note from a parent or guardian explaining the unusual circumstance. Sports is not an unusual circumstance!
